Identity recovery

Identity recovery

In Canada, expiration of a study permit or work permit means loss of identity, while expiration of a temporary visit visa used for entry has no serious consequences. Within 90 days after losing status, you still have the opportunity to apply for restoration of status, but applicants cannot work or study while waiting for restoration of status.

Categories for recovery of identity are not supported

The post-graduation work permit clearly requires the applicant to hold a valid study permit, and the bridge work permit clearly requires the applicant to hold a valid work permit. These two visas cannot be applied when the status has expired.

What to do if it exceeds 90 days?

If your status has expired for more than 90 days, there are only a few circumstances where you do not need to leave Canada:
1. An application for reunification or refugee has been submitted,
2. The applicant is a minor and his parents hold a valid work permit or study permit.
In other cases, it is recommended to leave Canada immediately. If the temporary visit visa you hold is still valid, a non-serious expected stay will not necessarily affect your next entry.
